TITLE: Wah Wah Sum
ARTIST: Jim Fives DATE: Unknown TYPE: Mural MEDIUM: Paint ABOUT: In 1868, the Northwest Amateur Boating Association was formed, an association that would organize rowing competitions. A few years later in 1870, Wah-Wah-Sum, a Chippewa phrase that translates to “Lightning on the water” would win first place in a Detroit race and then win again in 1871 and again in 1872. They would continue to win competitions for the next few years and went on to compete in a national championship in Saratoga in New York in 1879. Barney and Hanford Topham were the two brothers that comprised the Wah-Wah-Sum team during the 1879 national championship, and who quite literally blew their competition out of the water, winning first place.
