Clowns (Lovesick, Acrobat, Juggler)

Picture
TITLE: Lovesick Clown, Acrobat Clown, Juggler Clown
ARTIST:  Marshall M. Fredericks
DATE: 1991
TYPE: Sculpture
MEDIA: Bronze

ABOUT: Fredericks did a series of clown sculptures in 1938 while teaching at Cranbrook. Carl Milles, who also taught there, visited his studio.  He looked at Fredericks clown sculptures for a moment and then he turned and said to Fredericks, "I wish I had done those."  That was the highest compliment that Milles could have paid Fredericks.

The theme of the circus and its characters were an interest of Fredericks. The series also includes Clown Musicians and Circus Clown. Small scale sculptures of the clown series can be viewed in the main exhibit gallery.
