DATE: Unknown TYPE: Sculpture MEDIUM: Terracotta ABOUT: The Sage Branch Library was built in Bay City, Michigan in 1884. The Sage Library featured a classroom on the first floor, the library residing on the second floor, and a reading room on the third floor. The library was named after Henry Sage, a prominent sawmill owner from New York who gifted the building to the people of Bay City. The Lady of Learning sculpture stands in a niche on the front of the building, welcoming all to come and learn. Clio, according to Greek Mythology, is one of nine Muses. The Muses are considered to be the inspirational goddesses of literature, the sciences, and the arts. Clio is typically shown with an open scroll or book as well as a crown of laurels.
